The North Fork of the American river from
Yankee Jim bridge to upper lake Clementine is an 11 mile float
filled with Rainbow trout, Small Mouth Bass and a few class II
rapids. This river fishes hot and cold depending on the time
of year and snow pack. The early season around late may or
early June gives anglers a chance to hook some of the best
fighting rainbows around. When the water flows stabilize in
July the river starts to clear and the small mouth bass start to
move up from lake Clementine for pre spawn. This is when you
want to fish it. Some of the best top water action I have
ever experienced has been on the lower two mile section from
ponderosa bridge to lake Clementine.
Any way you want to fish it seems to work. I saw my uncle
catch 22 bass in the same hole with a sink tip and a large wooly
bugger. He clams it was on 22 cast, but I think I saw him slip
in a few more. My favorite is using the large frog patters to
get them jumping clean out of the water on the take. Either way
you prefer to fish will result in a good day fishing. the
weather is usually hot and there is not much for scenery, but it is a
fun river to fish.
